The Trial of John Peter Zenger: Trial Re-enactment & Panel Discussion on Freedom of the Press

Step back into history with a live reenactment of The Crown v. John Peter Zenger, the landmark 1735 trial that helped establish the importance of freedom of the press in America.

The U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts for the Northern District of New York invite the public to a free, family-friendly reenactment of the historic trial. Featuring live actors, period costumes, and an interactive look at freedom of the press, the program will bring this pivotal moment in American history to life.

Local students and community members will portray judges, lawyers, witnesses, and jurors as the audience learns how printer John Peter Zenger and his landmark trial helped shape the principles of free speech and freedom of the press.

Following the reenactment, attendees are invited to stay for an expert panel discussion on Freedom of the Press, followed by a reception.
