Court Announces Selection of FCBA Past President Mitchell J. Katz as New Magistrate Judge

The Board of Judges of the Northern District of New York has selected Mitchell Jay Katz to serve as a Magistrate Judge in Syracuse. Mr. Katz will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Chief Magistrate Judge Andrew Baxter in January 2024.

Mitchell J. Katz is a partner with Barclay Damon LLP and a member of its Commercial Litigation Practice Group. Mr. Katz is a 1983 graduate of Binghamton University and earned his J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 1986.

He was admitted to practice in the New York State Courts and in the Northern District of New York in 1987. Mr. Katz was a shareholder and director of Menter, Rudin & Trivelpiece, P.C. from 1992 to 2018, and an associate and partner in Hiscock & Barclay from 1986 until 1992.

Mr. Katz’s memberships include: the FCBA (Past President – 2018), the Onondaga County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association (past Chair of the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section), and the New York State Chief Judge’s Advisory Council on the Commercial Division. The Board of Judges and court staff are delighted to welcome Mitchell Katz to the Northern District bench. His extensive litigation and management experience has well prepared him to serve as a U.S. Magistrate Judge.
