In Memoriam: Past President Jeffrey Hurd

Jeffrey HurdJeffrey Earl Hurd, Esq., 57, passed away suddenly on September 22, 2024. Jeff was born on April 22, 1967, in Utica, N.Y. and grew up in Rome, N.Y. He graduated from Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1989 where he was president of the Chi Psi Fraternity. From there he went on to Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, MN and graduated with a Juris Doctorate in 1992. While in St. Paul, Jeff met Nancy (Swanson), whom he married in 1995. The couple later moved to Slingerlands, N.Y. where Jeff was a partner at Burke, Scolamiero & Hurd, LLP.

Jeff was the President of the Federal Court Bar Association for the Northern District of New York in 2015, and served on the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York panel of mediators. He also served on the Board of Directors for Art de Cure, a non-profit organization that was dedicated to raising money and awareness for diabetes research.

He enjoyed sports, wrestling on the varsity team in both high school and college. He completed the Ironman Lake Placid triathlon in 2010, 19 marathons, and the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, along with multiple Utica Boilermakers. Jeff enjoyed many rounds of golf with his Florida neighbors and often took advantage of early mornings for outdoor runs.

His spirit, kindness and generosity were felt by family, friends and legal colleagues alike. What Jeff loved most was spending time with family, walking his dogs with his wife, watching sunsets and sitting in front of an outdoor fire. He will be greatly missed.

Jeff is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; parents, the Honorable David and Constance Hurd of Rome, N.Y.; mother-in-law, Florence Swanson; sisters, Kristine (Steve) Kelly and Melissa (Troy Brekken) Hurd; brother, Steve (Jen Pugliese) Hurd; sister-in-law, Laura (Troy) Benike; brothers-in-law, Doug (Selene) Swanson and Gregg (Aurora) Swanson; nephews (including two godsons), Shawn, Chance, Finn and Kaden; and nieces, Chandra, Leia, Hannah and Paula. He was proceeded in death by his father-in-law, Melvin Swanson.
