Earlier this year, our longtime Chief Deputy Clerk, Dan McAllister, accepted the position as Clerk of Court for the District of Arizona. We are incredibly proud of Dan for all that he accomplished here in the Northern District and look forward to watching him excel in leading one of the nation’s largest and busiest courts. With Dan’s departure, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Lori Welch and Maurice Christopher as Chief Deputy Clerks. They will bring together complementary areas of expertise that will strengthen the Court’s ability to serve the bench, bar, and public.
Chief Deputy Lori Welch, based in Syracuse, enters the role with extensive experience in federal court operations. Throughout her career, Lori has developed a deep understanding of the day-to-day administration of the federal judiciary, including case management, courtroom operations, clerk’s office procedures, and the many processes that support judges, chambers, attorneys, and litigants. She brings to the position a wealth of institutional knowledge and practical experience in ensuring that court operations run efficiently and effectively.
Chief Deputy Maurice Christopher’s career has focused extensively on information technology, and the increasingly important role technology plays in the administration of justice. Maurice, who is based in Albany, brings significant experience in courtroom technology, systems administration, cybersecurity, electronic filing, and the technological infrastructure upon which modern federal courts depend.
Our newest Chief Deputies bring distinctly different, but highly complementary, skill sets to their new positions. One brings extensive experience in the traditional and administrative operations of the Clerk’s Office, while the other brings specialized expertise in technology and the digital systems that increasingly drive the Court’s work.
Their appointments reflect the evolving nature of federal court administration. Today’s federal courts must simultaneously maintain the fundamental principles and procedures that have long governed the administration of justice while adapting to rapidly changing technology, cybersecurity threats, electronic case management, and new ways of delivering services to the legal community and the public. The partnership of these two Chief Deputies will enhance the Court’s ability to meet these challenges.
For members of the bar, these appointments will translate into a Clerk’s Office that is focused on efficiency, accessibility, reliability, and service. Whether the issue involves case administration, courtroom procedures, electronic filing, technology, or other aspects of federal court practice, the Court will benefit from having Lori and Maurice’s expertise in both the operational and technological sides of its mission. Equally important, these appointments underscore the Court’s commitment to providing the bench and bar with a Clerk’s Office prepared for the future. The administration of justice depends not only on the work of judges and lawyers in the courtroom, but also on the dedicated professionals who ensure that the Court’s operations function effectively behind the scenes.
