This program will introduce attorneys, particularly those in the first three years of practice or who do not practice regularly in federal court, to the nuts and bolts of practicing in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York by focusing on the District’s Local Rules of Practice, which supplement the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure and often determine the course, if not outcome, of litigation. We will highlight best practices in a variety of areas including filing documents electronically with the Court’s MFT system, filing documents under seal, redacting sensitive information in documents, and briefing motions to dismiss and for summary judgment. Panelists will include the District’s Chief Judge, a career law clerk, the Court’s Operations Manager, and practicing attorney(s).

A Legal Thanksgiving Casserole: The Recipe to Success in Cybersecurity Law with a Dash of Privacy (November 9, 2023) (VOD)
Course Description: This informative CLE will discuss the legal landscape surrounding data privacy and cybersecurity including an overview of international, US federal, and state laws. It will cover recent litigation and enforcement actions and conclude with a segment on pending legislation and the future state of US cyber and privacy law. Additionally, the presenters will provide an overview of federal criminal laws related to cybercrime as well as federal law related to the gathering of digital evidence.

Trying a Civil Rights Case – October 4 (Albany) & October 5 (Syracuse)

Cross-Examination & Closing Statements in Federal Court (July 19, 2023) (VOD)
This CLE will present an overview of the “Do’s and Don’ts” of cross-examination, including the boundaries of cross-examination and how to properly impeach a witness. The panel will also discuss what limitations are placed on closing arguments by existing case law and how to apply the jury instructions to the facts of your case in closing arguments.

A day-long training covering important topics including developing the fourth amendment record, Supreme Court and 2nd Circuit updates, understanding Cellebrite Reader forensic reports, amendments to sentencing guidelines, recent developments for challenges to federal prosecutions, and ethical considerations for criminal defense attorneys.
